INTS 216 - African and the World

Institution:
Trinity College
Subject:
Description:
This course examines Africa's historical relationship with the Americas, Europe, and Asia. Through an examination of early trans-Saharan and Indian Ocean trading networks, the Atlantic slave trade, colonial rule, and 20th century migration and global trade, we will consider changing patterns in the movement of people, ideas and commodities between Africa and other world regions. We will combine a critical historical understanding of Africa's global economic position (from the slave trade to international development aid) with a consideration of key intellectual and cultural cross-currents (such as Islam and Christianity, Pan-Africanism, and international feminism and environmentalism).
