Students will be asked to grapple with fundamental questions about the nature and function of art: What is the relationship between art and life Is beauty an essential feature of art How do we determine the value of art Is the experience of art culturally specific When art offends, should it be subject to constraint To address these questions and others, students will read a wide range of authors including: Plato, Oscar Wilde, John Cage, Leo Tolstoy, Maya Angelou, and Nadine Gordimer.
