This course will examine the history of Jewish-Christian relations in medieval Europe. It will study theories of anti-Judaism, shifts in Christian attitudes following the 1096 Crusade massacres, the role of the Church, Christian stereotypes of Jews, conversion from Judaism to Christianity, protection and persecution by royal governments, local violence, expulsions, the Inquisition as well as the specific experiences of Jews in England, France, and Spain. The course will also draw on comparative material from Christian interaction with Muslims and heretics, as well as material on the Jewish experience with medieval Islam.
