Drawing on a wide and diverse variety of sources-seminal works of scholarship, travelers' accounts, planters' diaries, works of fiction, and slave reminiscences-this course will attempt to draw a balanced portrait of slavery in the American south in the years prior to the Civil War. Readings will include substantial selections from historians such as Phillips, Stampp, and Genovese, pro-slavery writings, and a variety of hostile contemporary accounts.
