This course will introduce students to the history of race and ethnic relations in Latin America and the Caribbean from the arrival of Columbus to the late 20th century. We will explore how the categories of race and ethnicity in Latin America and the Caribbean have undergone a very different evolution when compared to the U.S. Two distinguishing facts that make race and ethnic history in Latin America and the Caribbean different from the U.S.: the much larger "Indian" populations that the Spaniards confronted and, secondly, the larger number of peoples of African descent transferred as slaves to Latin America and the Caribbean. This course will examine this process in the context of colonization, post-Independence political systems, nation-state formation, and contemporary struggles over different identities.
