This seminar will explore the Crusades of medieval and early modern Europe through extensive reading of primary sources: chronicles, letters, and treatises. We will examine the origins of the Crusades; the religious culture of sanctified violence; military technology, strategy and battles; relations among Christians, Muslims, heretics, and Jews; the nature of the Crusader states in the Middle East; and the role crusading played in the Reformation and the age of exploration.
