An introduction to Russian history from earliest times through the death of Tsar Alexander II. This course explores the social, cultural, and political development of medieval and early modern Russia; the significance and impact on Russian society of the revolutionary reforms of Tsar Peter the Great; the flowering of Russian learning and culture under the "enlightened" Empress Catherine the Great; Russian imperial aspirations in Europe in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries; and the social upheavals and revolutionary movements of the nineteenth century that paved the way for the October Revolution of 1917.
