An investigation of the social , economic, cultural and political history of South Asia from the consolidation of British and French domination to the contemporary crises of the various South Asian states (notably India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka). The main topics to be explored include: the deindustrialization of South Asia, the emergence of religion as the primary focus of Indian society, the development of South Asian feminism and the attempt by the various nations to negotiate a dignified place in the 20th century.
