This survey course introduces students to the broad sweep of political, social, economic, and sectarian forces that have shaped the development of modern Ireland. Beginning with close of Hugh O'Neill's rebellion against Queen Elizabeth I (1603) and concluding with the Treaty negotiations that ended the Anglo-Irish War (1921), students will examine the clash of cultural identity and faith that serves as backdrop to the unsettled conditions of the present day. To an extraordinary degree, the study of modern Ireland reveals the power of historical myth and stereotype to shape the destiny of a people.
