This course will introduce students to the major themes of medieval history from the fall of the Carolingian Empire to the beginning of the Reformation with an emphasis on how a distinctively European society takes shape. We will study feudalism, the papacy, the Holy Roman Empire, the formation of medieval states and law, kingship, Crusades, plague, famine, elite and popular religious movements, and major political and national conflicts.
