Your mission, should you choose to take this seminar, is to help determine how Trinity College might best deploy limited resources, such as parking spaces, classrooms, and campus-safety officers, to name just three. Your analyses will make extensive use of the techniques of operations research (OR). This is a discipline in which a variety of mathematical tools are brought to bear on the problems of making better decisions with the available information. It was born of desperate necessity on the eve of World War II, as the British Air Ministry sought to coordinate tracking information from its new radar stations. It can be fairly said that OR analyses constituted extremely significant contributions to Allied victory in World War II. The mathematical tools we'll need are built into common spreadsheet programs, such as Excel, Quattro, and 1-2-3, but we will not be content to apply such software blindly.
