The prominence of human rights issues has risen dramatically in recent decades, yet rights continue to be violated in most countries. What explains the gap between human rights rhetoric and practice We will explore the key debates surrounding the concept and application of human rights, paying close attention to the role of power. What happens when human rights norms clash with the interests of powerful states, military apparatuses, and multinational corporations Under what conditions can human rights conditions be changed, and what role can human rights activists and institutions play Drawing on a broad range of readings and case studies from around the world, including the United States, we will examine scholarly writings, first-hand testimonial accounts, and human rights reports.
