This course will examine how British literature represents mystical life in relation to concepts of the British social body in the 19th century. Gothic works, loss-of-faith novels, spiritualist fiction, and literature with mystical amalgams of distinct belief systems (such as spiritualist Buddhism) will be covered. Central questions we will ask include how do expressions of mystical life relate to national identity and how does an increase in faith perspectives in the late 19th century relate to the expansion of the British Empire The readings include works by Charlotte Bront , Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Sheridan LeFanu, Mrs. Humphrey Ward, Marie Corelli, and Cora Linn Daniels.
