This course surveys African American literature in a variety of genres from the 18th century to the present. Through the study of texts by Frederick Douglass, Harriet Jacobs, Charles Chesnutt, W.E.B. DuBois, Langston Hughes, Zora Neale Hurston, Toni Morrison, and others, we will explore the ways these writers have represented and influenced the history of people of African descent in the United States, from slavery and abolition to Jim-Crow segregation and struggles for civil rights; how their work has intervened in the construction of race and imagined the black diaspora; and how their innovations in literary form have engaged with continuing political questions of nation, gender, sexuality, and class.
