A survey of literature, written and oral, produced in what is now the United States from the earliest times to around the Civil War. We will examine relationships among cultural and intellectual developments and the politics, economics, and societies of North America. Authors to be read include some that are well known-such as Emerson, Melville, Dickinson-and some who are less familiar-such as Cabeca de Vaca, John Rollin Ridge, and Harriet Jacobs.
