This course examines and evaluates the economic and political impact of the market-oriented reforms being implemented in four of the strategically important countries of the region. Topics include: origins of the interventionist state; state-led industrialization and structural transformation; the rise of populism and economic policy; monetarism and structuralism; stabilization and adjustment policies; trade liberalization and financial deregulation; and the evolution, rationale, and impact of privatization. Prerequisite: C- or better in Economics 101 and an Economics 200-level course or another social science course dealing with developing nations.
