Institution:
Trinity College
Subject:
Description:
Towards the end of the last century, the term "Greater China" came into frequent usage to refer to the Chinese communities worldwide, and the field of Chinese studies has since then taken on a new dimension of considering the continuation of Chinese culture in various geographical locales, each with its specific historical and political concerns. This course will study closely the representative works of fiction and film from Chinese communities in four such locales: Mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and the United States. As they contemplate the major issues involved in the study of the Chinese diaspora, students will seek to understand the different ways in which people of Chinese descent around the world have come to engage with their "Chineseness." All readings are in English, and all films carry English subtitles.
