The city was the foundation of the classical world. This course examines the city from its beginnings to the collapse of the Mediterranean empires in the seventh century A.D. It includes Athens and Rome, but other Greek and Roman cities are covered, as are cities of other cultures: Egypt, Carthage, and the various Persian kingdoms.
