An exploration of the causes of the American Civil War, including a detailed study of slavery, abolitionism, the development of Southern sectional consciousness, conflict over the Western territories, the disintegration of the national party system and the rise of the Republicans, Lincoln's election, and the secession crisis of 1860-61.
