An interdisciplinary introduction to the history of relations between these two nations, with an emphasis on the experience of Italians in America, through discussion of works of history, sociology, literature, and film. Topics include explorers and colonists; the Great Emigration; the ethnic neighborhood; the trial of Sacco & Vanzetti; mafia; the war against fascism; unions; religion; and assimilation. There will be course-related trips to Little Italys in cities of the Eastern Seaboard. Students wishing to count this course toward a major in Italian should receive permission of the instructor.
