We will examine relationships among cultural and intellectual currents and the political, economic, and social development in the United States during this period, focusing particularly on race, gender, and class as analytic categories. Authors to be read include some who are well known-such as James, Hemingway, and Faulkner-and some who are less familiar-such as Freeman, Chesnutt, and Hurston.
