This course will introduce students to the experience of black Americans in the national political arena during the 20th century. We will analyze black involvement in clientage politics (Booker T. Washington), interest group politics (NAACP) and electoral politics (the Jackson campaigns). We will also examine black involvement in radical or reform-minded political movements (the gay rights movement, feminist politics, etc.).
