The urban experience has profoundly affected the lives of immigrants and the shaping of ethnic identity in this country. This course will examine the intertwined histories of various immigrant, ethnic and racial groups in several cities over time. Concentrating primarily on the late 19th and the 20th centuries, we will consider such issues as assimilation, pluralism, identity formation, notions of community, religion, and political struggle in the urban context.
