A study of American fiction since the 1940s. Particular emphasis will be placed on the emergence of powerful new traditions on "minority" and women's writing. Among the books to be read are works by Gwendolyn Brooks, Toni Morrison, Rolando Hinojosa, Leslie Silko, and Maxine Hong Kingston.
