How different are Southerners from "the rest of us " Are the images of the South we've experienced through television and film caricatures or characteristics of the region Are there discernable differences in the customs, language, and arts of the region that constitute a distinct culture of the South This course will address these questions, drawing on scholarly material concerning culture studies as well as literature, film, and other art of the American South. Each course session will be organized around a focus questions that will move us toward an understanding of southern culture and a comprehensive profile of its features. We will draw on material provided by the Center for the Study of Southern Culture and the Center for Southern Folklore to answer our questions. Class time will be spent viewing film, listening to music, discussing readings, debating issues central to the course purpose, and working on group projects.
