The push for cultural literacy and familiarity with the "Great Books" and classical arts often neglects the important contributions that people of African descent have made to the development of the world. The works of activists, scholars, authors, and artists such as Ida B. Wells Barnett, David Walker, W.E.B. DuBois, Frantz Fanon, and Nina Simone address issues of importance to people regardless of their cultural background: justice, oppression, human rights, education, identity and the human condition. This course will examine 1-2 bodies of work by authors and/or artists of African descent. to explore what each tells us about the human condition and power relationships during a particular historical context.
