This course will examine American attitudes toward nature, industrialization, technology, our character as a people, and our national destiny, especially as reflected in recent films, science fiction, and classic literature like Walden and Leaves of Grass. In addition to the views of popular fiction writers (e.g. Twain and Vonnegut), students will also sample the responses of American poets and painters to a remarkable series of cultural innovations and technical breakthroughs - from the first railroad and telecommunications networks to the development of computers and nuclear arms.
