Interested in learning to write about film The Western is a particularly creative and powerful medium for exploring dynamic social and cultural issues. It is particularly open to examining the nature of creative expression, social and historical contexts, and power relations among different groups. The Western provides wonderful and exciting topics for learning about the arts of analyzing and writing about film. We are going to saddle up and ride out, approaching the Western from viewpoints of how one can write about film, exploring various rich issues of creativity, society, history and power. Possible examples of films are High Noon (1952), Shane (1953), Sergeant Rutledge (1960), Cheyenne Autumn (1964), Valdez is Coming (1971), Pale Horse, Pale Rider (1985), Unforgiven (1992).
