Exploring the changing roles of individuals in post- 1789 European society, this course examines major trends and events through the perspective of their impact on the self-perception of individuals. The course proceeds through such topics as the development of working-class consciousness, the rise of the respectable middle class, the Nazification of "ordinary Germans," and the meaning ofreligious identity in modern society.
