S, alternate years. Introduction to the basic concepts of traffic engineering and highway design. The traffic-engineering portion introduces basic concepts including how the motorist, vehicle, road, and pedestrian interact, roadway capacity and Level-of-Service, traffic flow and queue theory, and traffic signal timing. Software applications are introduced regarding traffic simulation and capacity analysis. The highway design portion of the course focuses on the basics of horizontal and vertical alignment of roadways, design vehicle, design speed, superelevation, sight distance, and other design considerations. Prerequisite: Admission to engineering program or permission of the instructor.
