S. The major works of Greek and Roman literature from Homer to Augustine are studied. Primary attention is devoted to the origins and development of Greek epic, lyric, drama, and historiography, and to their transformation in the literature of Rome and the church fathers. Artistic and archaeological evidence supplements the study of the texts.
