This course explores the philosophical, social, cultural, and historical foundations of education. The class draws heavily upon prominent educational philosophers from Plato to today with the aim of introducing students to the ideas that shape educational practices. Students are encouraged to question, explore, and develop their own thoughts about what education is and should be. In particular, the course explores such questions as: Why do we educate? What does it mean to be educated? What are learning and teaching? What is and should be the relationship between school and society? What is the relationship between democracy and education?
