An analysis of mass media as a social institution, this course is an interdisciplinary approach to the origins, history, evolution, and social functions of the mass media, the impact of the media on the social self, and the transitions from oral to print to electronic media. Emphasis on electronic media and the impact of media on the social construction of reality. (Offered every year.) 3 credits.
