This course traces the history and development of African American popular music from the early 17th century to the 21st century with a focus on the concept of soul as an essential aspect of American popular culture. The central goal of this course is to provide students with a foundation of knowledge and aural analytical skill through which they can identify, understand, and appreciate the contributions of soul music to the aesthetic values of contemporary music culture - sacred (Gospel) and secular (rhythm and blues). The course strives to stimulate the imagination and creativity of the student by providing opportunities for their expression. Lectures are augmented with discussions, readings, videos, extensive listening to music samples, and a group term project. Course is appropriate for majors and nonmajors. Meets the general studies elective requirement.
