This course covers the historical foundations of the pre-modern Middle East beginning with the pre-Islamic Near East and Arabia and continung with Muhammad and the origins of the Islamic tradition; the establishment of regional Islamic rule, ideology, and institutions; and the medieval dynasties up to and including the Ottomans. The course primarily focuses on general political narrative, but also considers social and cultural dynamics of the early and medieval Islamic world.
