This workshop explores the work of photographers who use role-playing and masquerade in their work. Examples include Cindy Sherman, Yasumasa Morimura, Claude Cahun and others who use elaborate costumes, masks, makeup, and photographic manipulations to depict themselves as characters of fiction and fantasy, or as interpretations of cultural icons and stereotypes. The class explores the historical and theoretical context for the use of masquerade in selfportraiture, as well as the challenge this practice represents to fixed ideas about gender, sexuality, and ethnicity.
