This course is an examination of major issues in the study of the Synoptic Gospels, with an exegesis of selected texts. Attention is given to the distinctive features of each gospel as well as to the characteristics that they share and the critical theories advanced to explain their possible literary interrelationships. Attention is also given to assessing the value and limitations of various critical methodologies and to evaluating the criteria and methods used in the various "quests" for the historical Jesus. The "Synoptic Problem" will be addressed. Students must submit translations of substantial portions of the text covered. Prerequisite: FD 900
