This course focuses on the impact that major disease epidemics have had on social, political and economic history. Major epidemics we will study include the Black Death in 14th-century Europe and the Influenza Epidemic of the early twentieth century. Students will evaluate the impact of these and other, more localized, demographic catastrophes, focusing on the vulnerabilities and sustainability of families, governments, and religious organizations in time of crisis.
