OLP 301 - Still Life Painting

Institution:
American Academy of Art
Subject:
Description:
Prerequisite: Completion of OLP202 5 semester credit hours In these 300-level studio courses, students will examine still life painting in two ways: by studying realist, modernist and post-modernist treatments of the genre, and by executing their own paintings in the studio. The goal of these courses is to give students a thorough understanding of the technical and conceptual issues that surround still life painting and to challenge them to exploit the genre as a way of developing their own style. Painting the still life is an excellent way of learning fundamental principles of painting, both technical and theoretical. But it is also a genre in its own right. This class will consider questions of subject matter and related technical questions. Students will be asked to begin considering aesthetic issues pertaining to the selection of subject matter, issues of personal style, and a personal philosophy in terms of their approach to painting.
