Description:

The present course introduces students to the Western concepts of psychosocial development and self-actualization and to the East Asian concept of self-cultivation. It then identifies the character development objectives of three different martial arts-Taiji, Taekwondo, and Judo. It follows with an examination of research on the psychological impact of practicing martial arts, with an emphasis on self-concept, self-esteem, mood, phenomenology, psychological health, psychotherapeutic outcomes, and self-actualization. In addition, the course examines the impact of the martial arts on aggression and hostility, sex discrimination and feminist awareness, and traditionalism versus modernization. 3 semester hours
