This course provides an overview of the field of sociolinguistics. It focuses on the interactive and interdependent nature of language and society. Topics will consist of the life-cycle of languages, including language maintenance, shift, and death; the influences of gender, age, ethnicity, geographical location, and national identity on attitudes toward language; and the social and political implications of teaching English both in the United States and abroad.
