An overview of the efforts - from the Enlightenment to postmodernism - to identify patterns of social organization and trends of societal development, to understand how people produce and reproduce shared meanings, and to develop ways to criticize domination. Introductions to Marx, Durkheim, Weber, Simmel, Freud, Mead, Parsons, Habermas, feminist theories, Foucault, and Giddens. Prerequisite: 2 Sociology courses and jr standing or consent of instructor. 2 units - Livesay.
