In depth study of an important period, idea, text or philosopher. Courses offered under this rubric will vary from year to year. Block 6: Advanced Topics in Philosophy: Shakespeare and the Philosophers. In this upper-division interdisciplinary seminar, students will explore the philosophical contexts for Shakespeare's plays. Themes this course will explore include individual authority and the construction of power, the rise of science, self-fashioning, and the efficacy of the individual, doubt and loss of the world. Readings will include selections from the most influential contemporaries and near contemporaries of Shakespeare. We'll explore Machiavelli's The Prince, Bacon's New Atlantis, Montaigne's Essays, and Descartes' Meditations in conversation with Shakespeare's Measure for Measure, Othello, Macbeth, and The Tempest.
