No previous musical experience needed. A kaleidoscopic introduction to the passionate and lofty music of the late 16th, 17th, and early 18th centuries. The course examines the fascinating English developments of the late Renaissance and early Baroque, the rediscovery of ancient music and the invention of opera, the flowering of instrumental music across Europe, and the final apotheosis of the high Baroque in the dramatic spectacle of Handel and the contrapuntal genius of Bach.
