An introduction to the history, theory and literature of American jazz music. Jazz as a primarily Afro-American cultural expression. Traditional African music and its relation to ragtime and blues. The evolution of jazz from its New Orleans origins to the present, as traced in the recorded legacy of such key innovators as Armstrong, Ellington, Parker, Davis, Monk and Coltrane.
