This course introduces the theory and practice of microbiology, with an emphasis on bacteria as objects of study. The origins of life on Earth, the isolation, cultivation and identification of bacteria, properties of eukaryotic microbes and infectious disease will be examined through discussion, lecture and laboratory work. Prerequisite: 2 yrs Studies in Humanities Biology and 1 yr Studies in Humanities Chemistry or consent of instructor. (Meets the Critical Perspectives: Scientific Investigation of the Natural World lab or field requirement.) (Not offered 2008-09.) 2 units.
