This course presents a critical appreciation of popular Japanese icons (Shintoism, Buddhism, budo, samurai, haiku poetry, tea ceremony, kabuki theatre, and rice) that scrutinizes how cultural practices and institutions have evolved and been adapted to symbolize Japan, both by Japanese and foreign observers.
