3 credits Based on the teachings of 15th-Century artist Cennino Cennini, this course familiarizes students with the complexities of creating fresco, by combining studio production with the firsthand study of historical and contemporary examples. Students progress from the first steps of grinding pigments and mixing plaster to painting their own fresco panels. The various methods, both past and present, for planning and executing large scale wall frescos will also be discussed. Weekly field trips to see frescos on site and presentations on the fresco tradition and its current applications will provide students with a full appreciation for this enduring technique. Prerequisites: Painting, Color and Light Fulfills: 200-level Painting Elective; Studio Elective
