Will examine the nature and evolution of drama through the study of plays by major representatives of the French theater from the 17th-century to the present, such as Corneille, Diderot, Hugo, Jarry, Artaud, etc. The history and aesthetics of the "mise en scene" will also be taken into consideration. Prerequisite: French 306, or 307, or 308 or consent of instructor. (Not offered 2008-09.) 1 unit.
