By providing an overview of states and societies in pre-colonial, colonial, and post-colonial Southeast Asia, this course aims to make sense of key forces which have shaped the region's diverse political systems today-the military juntas in Burma and Thailand, the socialist regime in Vietnam, single party dominant systems in Singapore and Malaysia, and multiparty presidential systems in Indonesia and the Philippines.
